Dear Exeter Families,

We know yesterday’s incident at the Junior High was unsettling for our school community, and we understand the concerns it has raised. The safety of our students and staff remains at the heart of our work and the highest priority of the Exeter Township School District Administration and Board of School Directors.

Before yesterday’s incident, the administration and board had recently met with the Exeter Township Police Department to discuss the potential addition of a School Resource Officer. This was planned to be a major discussion point at the next board meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 17th at 7PM at the Lausch Administration Building (200 Elm Street, Reading, PA 19606). We recognize that yesterday’s events bring added significance to this conversation, and we welcome our community’s input as we discuss this and other safety measures we can take to protect our buildings, students and staff.

Please know that this agenda item is an opportunity for discussion only. No vote or formal action regarding a School Resource Officer will take place at this meeting. Community members are invited to attend, listen to the discussion and share their thoughts during public comment in accordance with Board Policy No. 006. While we will not be able to discuss details of the ongoing police investigation during the meeting, we will continue to share pertinent updates from the ETPD through ParentSquare.

As we support our school community, we wanted to remind parents that additional counseling support has been made available to Junior High students, and students at any of our schools who would benefit from support are encouraged to speak with their school counselor. Most importantly, however, we ask that you remind your students of reporting any safety concern to police, school staff or through Safe2Say. We remain grateful to those who promptly reported their concerns, helping us and law enforcement respond rapidly.

We value your questions and perspectives as we work together to support a safe and welcoming learning environment for every student.

Sincerely,
Dr. Christy Haller & the Exeter Township Board of School Directors
